The Commission on the Powers and Electoral
Arrangements of the National Assembly for Wales

Submission by the Wales Labour Party

The Size of the Assembly

"With the present work-load the branch saw no reason to have more than 60 AMs, but this is based on the anecdotal evidence that no AM’s had been heard complaining about how much they had to do." Mold and District BLP

The last four years has seen the Assembly develop a substantially larger array of policies than would have been possible under the old Welsh Office. This is due in no small part to the size of the Assembly, and its ability to develop and scrutinise policy through directly elected representatives.

Welsh Labour believes that a 60 member Assembly has worked well.
